Turbine Removal & Re-Powering

Funded Solutions
Turbine Removal and Re-powering
Many wind turbines in the UK are reaching the end of their normal operational life of 20 years or have broken and are no longer operational. When turbines reach this stage, there are three options available: lifetime extension – which will only apply under certain conditions – decommissioning or repowering. Infinite offer a service to decommission and remove failed turbines and have the capability to repower older turbines with the latest turbine technology.
Turbine Removal
Infinite can de-commission and remove end of life or broken wind turbines that are no longer operational.
Infinite works closely with recycling specialists to ensure that as many turbine parts as possible are re-cycled or re-purposed for use in alternative areas such as children’s play parks.
Re-Powering
Many Feed in Tariff (FiT) scale turbine models were based on technology developed in the 1980s when the wind industry began to emerge in Denmark and northern Germany. Smaller scale turbines of 100-500kW were the first products to come to market and were typically based on technology from a previous era. This resulted in limitations both in terms of output capacity and overall performance.
These FiT wind turbines can now be replaced – or repowered – without losing FiT accreditation from Ofgem.
Ofgem have also confirmed that where there is an increase in capacity of a FiT accredited installation, payments will be prorated accordingly. Simply put, an installation that was originally accredited by Ofgem at 500kW capacity but has subsequently been re-powered based on a turbine with 1MW capacity, should continue to receive FiT payments for 50% of the generation they export. The additional generation can be used on site or sold via a PPA.
Infinite provide all the services required to repower older wind turbine developments and maximise the yield from consented turbine projects.
Ofgem’s revised guidance for turbine owners accredited under the FiT scheme, who are considering swapping generation equipment or full asset replacement, is published publicly here: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/feed-tariffs-fit-decision-replacement-generating-equipment

“It was a pleasure to work with Infinite in setting up the new service, which will allow a wider range of business to access renewable energy generation and cut their energy costs, while removing much of the bureaucracy and initial costs normally involved. We know more and more businesses are interested in switching to greener energy sources, and the support provided via IRW will help even more businesses to make that change.”
Ashley Jones, Senior Investment Executive at the Development Bank of Wales
"Sustainability is front and centre in all we do as a business and, working with our energy partner, Infinite Renewables, we've established new infrastructure to generate energy that's local and renewable."
Inga Doak, Head of Sustainability at The Royal Mint
“To showcase how a renewable energy system can lead the future of energy, we wanted to install wind, solar and battery storage on the global climate stage at COP28 in Dubai. Having worked with Infinite Renewables over the past couple of years, on projects like the Glastonbury wind turbine, we knew they were the perfect partner to help us bring to life this installation in such a short amount of time. We have some really exciting projects in line with Infinite which will continue to showcase their global network and unrivalled ability as we look ahead into 2024.”
Paul Loran, Director at Octopus Energy Generation
“Albion is thrilled to be bringing its local energy expertise to enable this ‘first of a kind’ project alongside the Infinite team and the Royal Mint. It is an important signpost in how the UK can achieve net zero emissions, democratise the energy system and support employment in the area. It is a very exciting step forward.”
Marco Yu, Partner at Albion Community Power
"The Royal Mint has worked closely with Infinite Renewables over a number of years to establish a Local Energy Centre that delivers significant sustainability and cost benefits to our business. Through this relationship, we work together to find solutions that deliver mutual benefits, whilst positively impacting the wider environment."
Lee Wilkey, Head of Strategic Sourcing at The Royal Mint
