The Pen yr Heol wind turbine forms part of the Pen Y Fan Energy Centre – one of six Local Energy Centres (LECs) being funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and Albion Capital. The LECs are developed and managed by Infinite.
Pen yr Heol farm initially contacted Infinite to assist them after they were saddled with an abandoned turbine project. As the existing turbine was unsafe for operation, Infinite arranged for the deinstallation of the turbine. A fresh planning permission was obtained for a larger EWT 900kw wind turbine which was installed and commissioned in 2023. The site benefits from good wind speeds of over 7 metres/sec and it is estimated that the turbine will generate almost 3 million kWh of clean renewable energy per annum. This equates to enough power to supply around a third of all residential properties within the parish of New Tredegar – around 750 residential properties.
The integrated on-roof solar PV and battery scheme supplies power to a local farm business and will help to fuel the expansion of an equine centre.
