Infinite Renewables has developed one of the first Project Electric Vehicle (EV) wind turbine-powered charging stations in the UK. This innovative ultra rapid charging system at Tafarnaubach, Tredegar in south east Wales offers discounted green energy direct from the turbine to the car providing the ultimate carbon busting solution for car charging.

Unlike conventional charging stations that run off the grid and have a blended electricity source, the new charging points are powered by green energy when the turbine is turning. This helps to make EV vehicles even more sustainable and contributes to the Welsh Government’s decarbonisation targets.

Using renewable energy also enables Infinite to offer lower charging costs to users.

The new charging station is very competitive when compared to normal ultra-rapid charging which is around 80p per kWh.

The turbine-powered charging station relieves capacity pressure from an increasingly stressed grid network. It also increases the revenue yield from an existing operating renewable asset and it provides substantial savings to the EV charging public with discounted unit costs for the power

Andrew Crossman, Director at Infinite Renewables said, “The wind turbine-powered ultra rapid charging station at Tafarnaubach, Tredegar is a transformative project that heralds the future of EV charging across the UK. Infinite is very proud to be at the forefront of this renewable energy innovation which offers motorists a greener, cleaner charging solution at lower cost.”

Infinite is in the process of developing additional Renewable EV charging opportunities using multi-technology generation such as wind and solar to power the future of EV charging.

The Welsh company, Infinite Renewables, has been tasked to set up a new Energy Centre on the Island of Sark in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Infinite will work with Sancus Utilities to provide the new renewable electricity source and grid.

The Sark government – Chief Pleas has committed to the principle of developing an islander-owned electricity supply at a cost of around £4m. This decision came in the wake of an independent body’s report concluding that a completely new system was needed due to health and safety concerns. The report described the island’s electricity grid as outdated and in a state of disrepair.

Infinite Renewables will now provide a detailed design incorporating the best mix and capacity of wind, solar, battery storage as well as back-up diesel generators to meet the current needs of the island’s population whilst also allowing for future growth in demand.

Sancus Utilities who work closely with Infinite on renewable energy projects will be engaged to design and install a brand-new grid distribution network on the island that will meet modern standards.

Now Chief Pleas have voted to move forward with the designs, the new grid and Energy Centre could be completed by the end of 2025.

The Head of Operations and Project Delivery at Infinite, Gillian Jones, said, “We are excited to be bringing our expertise in renewable energy and micro girds to Sark. Our aim is to design an energy centre that provides greener, more secure, reliable, and cost-effective power to the residents and businesses on the Island. The project will be logistically challenging but tremendously rewarding. Infinite is looking forward to developing an Energy Centre to supply the Island of Sark for generations to come.’’

At the request of UK-based energy retailer Octopus Energy, one of the sponsors at COP28 in Dubai, the Welsh company Infinite Renewables supplied 5 mobile energy centres including 5 wind turbines and BESS solar systems.

Each renewable energy centre comprised: 5 x Bestwatt 45kW Wind Turbines, 5 x 120 kW Battery Energy Storage Systems and 5 x 3.6 kW Solar Systems.

The BESS and Solar System were integrated in a trailer for plug and play mobile deployment. The turbines that were installed are an upwind, stall regulated design, supplying 3 phase power and are built in the Netherlands and Germany but the mobile base design has been developed by Infinite Renewables and are manufactured in Wales in the UK.

The turbines at COP28 were installed on mobile ballasted foundation bases. This is the first time steel mobile turbine bases have been used. Each base weighs over 120 tons including the concrete ballast. The bases are re-useable and create minimal environmental impact – they sit on top of the ground not in it so are very easy to remove. The 45kW generator in each turbine is capable of generating over 1000kw per day at full output. Cut in wind speed is 3.5m per second and cut out wind speed is 25mps (wind of 60mph) The battery in the trailer is 120kwh of storage and the solar panels are 3.6kw. The turbine installation showcases how mobile renewable technology (wind, solar and batteries) working in tandem with each other can be deployed for islanded and on-grid applications.

Andrew Crossman, Director at Infinite Renewables said, “After a phenomenal effort from everyone involved, we are incredibly proud to have delivered 5 renewable energy centres to COP28 in Dubai for Octopus Energy – within 8 weeks! The mobile energy centres are a first of its kind installation and feature unique mobile ballasted bases for the wind turbines and trailerised battery storage integrated with solar PV. The mobile energy centres, developed by Infinite Renewables, showcase how renewable energy can be deployed quickly – whenever and wherever it is needed. The purple and pink turbines created huge interest in Dubai and we are now looking to expand our operation into the Middle East.”

Paul Loran, Director at Octopus Energy Generation said, “To showcase how a renewables energy system can lead the future of energy, we wanted to install wind, solar and battery storage on the global climate stage at COP28 in Dubai. Having worked with Infinite Renewables over the past couple of years, on projects like the Glastonbury wind turbine, we knew they were the perfect partner to help us bring to life this installation in such a short amount of time. We have some really exciting projects in line with Infinite which will continue to showcase their global network and unrivalled ability as we look ahead into 2024.”

Infinite Renewables in Wales is leading the charge when it comes to greener, cleaner energy in the UK. Its latest achievement is that it launches a new multi technology Energy Centre at The Royal Mint (TRM) in Wales on Wednesday 19th July 2023.

The Centre is made up of cutting edge technology – a 2MW solar farm (built by Evo Energy), 2 wind turbines, a hydrogen-ready combined heat and power unit (CHP) and a dual chemistry battery energy storage system (BESS).

This cutting edge battery technology which brings together both lead-acid and lithium-ion battery chemistries is controlled by a bespoke battery management system developed by battery firm GS Yuasa, the University of Sheffield and Infinite. The hybrid is set within a containerized energy storage system and offers a new power solution that combines the fast response of the lithium battery with the endurance of lead acid. It works in a complementary way to provide economical and sustainable solutions for numerous storage services from the same system.

The Energy Centre has a 2MW gas fired CHP engine, supplied by AB Energy UK. It has been selected because of its market leading engine efficiency of 44.1% which maximises the amount of power that can be produced from the gas consumed.

The Vestas 850kw ‘Daffodil’ wind turbine designed, supplied and built by Infinite is integrated into the Energy Centre generation. In addition, there is a second ‘Daffodil’ wind turbine on adjacent land supplying power to the Royal Mint Energy Centre. Both supply energy to TRM. Infinite is now working with TRM to extend the renewables microgrid network out to adjacent industries and businesses – to supply them with renewable and low carbon power from the Energy Centre.

Andrew Crossman, Director at Infinite said “We are extremely proud to have delivered the Royal Mint Energy Centre on budget and on time. This low carbon energy centre is a trail blazing project that shines a light on the future of local, multi-technology generation and consumption within an industrial community network – it provides a blueprint for both commercial and domestic sustainable energy systems in a low carbon world, protecting business and residential communities against energy market volatility whilst providing energy security for the future.”

Inga Doak, Head of Sustainability at the Royal Mint, says, “Sustainability is front and centre in all we do as a business and this is another exciting step in The Royal Mint’s sustainability journey, allowing us to step closer towards our goal of becoming Net Zero by 2050.”

The Energy Centre is part of the Generation Storage Supply project (GSCS) and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government and Albion Community Power.

The renewable energy company Infinite has won the tender to supply power directly to the Royal Mint (TRM). The project will bring together specialists in the renewable energy field – development, technical and finance, to build a multi technology Local Energy Centre on the site in Llantrisant. The Centre will incorporate a 2MW Solar Farm on adjacent land which in itself is forecast to provide 2.4GWh of annual generation directly to TRM. Wind, hydrogen-ready Combined Heat & Power (CHP) and battery storage form the mix of other technologies used.

Andrew Crossman, Director Infinite, said: “The Energy Centre at the Royal Mint is a tremendously exciting and innovative project that pushes the boundaries of de-centralised energy generation and microgrid distribution. As a large manufacturing site, the Royal Mint is the perfect candidate site for an integrated energy centre. The generation from low carbon and renewable technologies, distributed via smart microgrid will provide a huge boost to The Royal Mint’s carbon reduction strategy.”

Sarah Bradley, Director of HR, Safety and Environment at the Royal Mint, said: “We are continually looking for ways to be a sustainable business and reduce our carbon impact and be a considerate neighbour to our environment. In 2018 we unveiled a wind turbine on site, and we are pleased to be working with Infinite to build on our commitment to renewable energy.”

The Vestas 850kW ‘Daffodil’ wind turbine which was designed, supplied and built by Infinite will be integrated into the LEC generation. It already supplies up to 10% of the Royal Mint’s energy demand.

The containerised energy storage scheme (ESS), will comprise of a dual-chemistry ADEPT battery management system (BMS), developed by Infinite in partnership with GS Yuasa and the University of Sheffield and will offer a new power solution that combines the fast response of the lithium battery with the endurance of lead acid.

The Centre which is expected to be operational by Autumn 2022 is part of the Generation Storage Consumption Supply project (GSCS) and is funded by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Albion Community Power. It will save on energy costs and offer carbon reduction.

Marco Yu, Investment Director, Albion Community Power, says: “Albion is thrilled to be bringing its local energy expertise to enable this ‘first of a kind’ project alongside the Infinite team and the Royal Mint. It is an important signpost in how the UK can achieve net zero emissions, democratise the energy system and support employment in the area. It is a very exciting step forward.”

Welsh Government Minister for Climate Change Julie James said: “This new project at the Royal Mint together with the recent opening of the Energy Centre in Ebbw Vale and other EU-funded local energy schemes which are planned across the South and West Wales are exciting developments and are an important step towards our ambition of a low-carbon future for Wales. They will provide cost effective, reliable green energy to local businesses and communities.”

Infinite will establish a local Community Fund with a percentage of the revenue generated by the CHP and Solar Farm distributed to local charities and community groups whose initiatives complement the themes of the European Structural Funds.

The innovative renewable energy company Infinite is launching its first Energy Centre at the Rassau industrial estate in south Wales. The combination of wind turbines, solar photovoltaics and battery storage will provide reliable, cost efficient and greener power directly to the customer.

Work at the site is moving on apace with the first phase of Infinite’s unique integrated energy centre – the installation of a 1MWh rooftop solar system at GS Yuasa’s factory, already completed. Approval has also been granted for the building of a wind turbine which will supply electricity directly to the site. The Energy Centre will be linked to an energy storage scheme with its ADEPT battery container bringing together the use of GS Yuasa’s lead acid and lithium batteries, thus offering optimum efficiency and flexibility when managing power across a micro-grid.

Andrew Crossman, Director, Infinite says: “The GSCS Energy Centre represents a step-change in the de-centralised distribution of low carbon and renewable energy. The Rassau scheme aims to share the benefits of multi technology generation within the immediate community, providing discounted renewable power and reducing the CO2 emissions in the area.”

Shaun Gardner, Managing Director, GS Yuasa Manufacturing UK Ltd added: “The project brings a number of benefits to our Ebbw Vale factory and the wider Rassau industrial estate. The unique combination of our lithium and lead-acid batteries, the latter of which are produced on site in South Wales, allows for the storage of greener energy, generated by either solar or wind, to be used at a later date.”

The centre is part of the Generation Storage Consumption Supply project (GSCS) and is one of up to seven local energy centre schemes in South and West Wales to be grant funded by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Match funding of £5.5m has been provided by Infinite’s funding partner, Albion Community Power. The total CAPEX for the schemes is £14.4m with £8.9m provided by the ERDF.

Welsh Government Minister for Climate Change, Julie James said: “Climate Change is at the heart of our decision making and we are committed to accelerating the transition to a low carbon energy system in Wales. The GSCS Energy Centre, alongside the other EU funded local energy schemes, will play an important role in driving action towards our ambition for a more sustainable future for Wales, by providing the benefits of cost-effective, more reliable green energy to local businesses and communities across South and West Wales.”

Marco Yu, Investment Director, Albion Community Power, says: “Albion has over 20 years’ experience funding sustainable energy projects across the UK. We backed the Infinite team in the early stages of its growth and are thrilled to be part of its latest pioneering, multi-technology projects that are leading the way in helping local businesses to decarbonise and reduce energy cost while alleviating the electricity load of the electricity grid network.”

About Infinite:
