As electric vehicles become a fixture on UK roads, charging infrastructure remains a major concern for drivers. Now, a new solution is emerging: wind-powered EV charging. Pioneered in Wales, this green technology promises faster, cleaner and more affordable charging – offering hope for a smoother, more sustainable EV journey. Maxine Ashford reports:

So, it comes as welcome news to Good Motoring that new approaches to the charging process are being explored – and that includes using power naturally generated by wind turbines. One of the first forecourts to offer this technology in the UK is based in Wales and has recently been opened by Infinite Renewables, a Welsh-based company that specialises in the design, development and management of renewable energy schemes.

In partnership with The Royal Mint and to mark the success of a five-year renewables project, Infinite is inviting Year 6 classes at schools in all six of its Local Energy Centre catchment areas in south Wales to create a bilingual ‘Clean Energy’ poster. The competition aims to help children understand the concept and environmental benefits of clean energy as Wales moves towards a Zero Carbon future.

The six winners will be invited, along with class members to The Royal Mint Experience where they will strike their own coins and discover some of the ways The Royal Mint is working towards a more sustainable future.

A bespoke workshop will introduce pupils to the Royal Mint’s colourful wind turbine, Delilah which was installed by Infinite in 2018 and is part of a multi-technology Local Energy Centre which is under construction at the site.

Using a scale, working model of the turbine, the pupils will explore how it is used to generate energy that helps power The Royal Mint. Currently, Delilah supplies up to 10% of the Royal Mint’s demand at its site in Llantrisant. Pupils will be able to interact with the model and discover ways of making the turbine work more efficiently. They will also build their own miniature working turbines to take home.

The competition will be judged by the naturalist and broadcaster Iolo Williams who will meet all six individual winners at The Royal Mint Experience, later in the year.

The competition closes on the 27th of January 2023 with the Winners announced on the 28th of February 2023. The school visits will take place during the Spring / Summer of 2023.

For more information, including catchment areas and how to express an interest in competing, please contact Jenny Daley at Infinite before the 18th of November 2022.

Gan ddefnyddio model o’r tyrbin sy’n gweithio ac ar raddfa, bydd y disgyblion yn archwilio sut mae’n cael ei ddefnyddio i gynhyrchu ynni sy’n helpu i bweru The Royal Mint. Ar hyn o bryd, mae Delilah yn cyflenwi hyd at 10% o alw The Royal Mint yn Llantrisant. Bydd disgyblion yn gallu rhyngweithio â’r model a darganfod ffyrdd o wneud i’r tyrbin weithio’n fwy effeithlon. Fe fyddan nhw hefyd yn adeiladu tyrbinau bach sy’n gweithio i fynd adref gyda nhw.

Bydd y gystadleuaeth yn cael ei beirniadu gan y naturiaethwr a’r darlledwr Iolo Williams a fydd yn cyfarfod â phob un o’r chwe enillydd unigol yn The Royal Mint Experience, yn nes ymlaen yn y flwyddyn.

A lead-acid and lithium-ion battery hybrid storage system in Wales has reached a first project milestone with the installation of solar panels, the renewable energy developer Infinite said on June 22.

The centre is one of up to seven local energy centre schemes under a ‘Generation Storage Consumption Supply’ project in Wales being grant funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

It comprises a combination of lead and lithium batteries to back up power generated by a 1MWh rooftop solar array at GS Yuasa’s battery factory, and in a second stage a wind turbine will be installed to supply electricity directly to the site.

The solar panels supply around 5% of the factory’s needs, and excess energy will be stored in the hybrid battery system, which will be housed in a battery container to complete the microgrid.

“The project brings a number of benefits to our Ebbw Vale factory and the wider Rassau Industrial Estate,” said Shaun Gardner, managing director of GS Yuasa Manufacturing UK.

“The unique combination of our lithium and lead-acid batteries, the latter of which are produced on site in South Wales, allows for the storage of greener energy, generated by either solar or wind, to be used at a later date.”

Forward: features are independent pieces written for Mewburn Ellis discussing and celebrating the best of innovation and exploration from the scientific and entrepreneurial worlds.

The global population is growing, and so is the demand for power – but growing just as quickly is the realisation that fossil fuels must be cut out of the generation equation.

Concerns around climate change and pollution have prompted countries around the world to turn to renewable sources for a greater proportion of their energy needs. It’s necessary in order to ‘free the environment of fossil fuel contamination, especially in the most populated cities around the world,’ explains Professor Maria Helena Braga, head of the engineering physics department at the University of Porto. ‘China, for example, is pushing the electrification of society, as it is impossible to breathe well in big cities such as Beijing.’
